Every president and first lady have put their interior design stamp on the White House. If Donald Trump has his way into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., let’s just hope the inside is all he and Melania get their gold-plated hands on in the 132-room mansion! Now for a brief history of presidential redecorating:
Jackie Kennedy added antique wallpaper with Revolutionary War scenes in the private dining room. President and Mrs. Monroe’s 53-piece set of gilded furniture filled the formal drawing room, known as the blue room after President Van Buren had it painted.
In anticipation of the Obamas’ move-in, a New York Times story in 2008 said, “The Kennedy White House was too French; the Clintons’, too Arkansas. In recent history, only the Waspy Bushes (both 41 and 43) have escaped decorating derision.” (As it happened, Michelle Obama’s modernist redo of the Old Family Dining Room had both admirers and haters.)
Meanwhile, there’s the question of how to pay for it. Mary Todd Lincoln famously overspent her $20,000 budget by $6,700. These days, the budget, appropriated by Congress, is $100,000. Ten of these Trump chandeliers and you’ve used practically half. Trump’s a real estate tycoon, so presumably, he’d figure it out.
Would it be a surprise to say that The Donald’s taste is over the top? His buildings, naturally, aren’t pinnacles of restraint either: gold glass–clad, emblazoned with his name, as tall as he can make them, heavy on the beige marble and travertine, and, wherever possible, floor-to-ceiling windows. No, his style—aesthetically, that is—is not about restraint. Heavily detailed ceilings, furniture with elaborate curves, and chandeliers galore grace (is that the right word?) his own penthouse.
It’s a given that there will be some tweaking of the interior, but what about the iconic exterior? Not even The Donald would be so bold, right? Right??
