What do people still wait in endless lines overnight for these days? The new iPhone? Tickets to the see the pope?
How about homesites in a Dallas suburb? A couple of dozen people camped out in McKinney, TX, one night this week for exactly that, according to NBC Dallas–Fort Worth. Why? Because there are 83 sites at Phase 2 of a development called Prestwyck, and it’s first come, first served.
Mike Russek, a Southwest Airlines employee who plans to move to McKinney from St. Louis, MO, wanted first crack at what he called the “premium lots.” A woman who is six months pregnant camped out because she wanted the corner lot. She told NBC, “I already have it picked out. I don’t want anyone to take it.”
More fodder for the campout: The first 10 served also got $3,000 in free upgrades. Construction won’t start until the end of the year, and move-in dates are estimated for July 2016.
McKinney, with a population of 156,767, has several times been named among the country’s fastest-growing cities, and its real estate market is growing wildly, too. One real estate agent said homes in McKinney “fly off the shelves.” The average home price there is $346,925, significantly higher than the state average, $215,000. Nearby Dallas, too, is one of the hottest real estate markets in the U.S.
The publicity seemed to have been very good for business—the developer told NBC-DFW that it expected the lots to sell within a day of being offered.
