What is it with nasty real estate signs? Two weeks ago we brought you the tale of spiteful neighbors, in which one couple, fed up with the couple next door, erected a for-sale-by-owner sign with this enticement: “my neighbor’s a d*bag!”
Portland, OR, residents have decided to take their grievances to the for-sale sign, too. “Portlanders apparently upset with the direction of the local housing market are slapping ‘no Californians’ stickers on For Sale signs in the city,” reports OregonLive.com.
The stickers are far subtler than the nasty neighbor signs. Heck, the silhouette of the state of California with a “no smoking”-style red line through it is practically tasteful. But the sentiment is strong, as Portland, often known as one of the great places to live, despite its being a bit thin on jobs, sees its housing market start to get all California-ed.
“A lot of these homes are going into bidding wars and going over ask price,” Quinn Irvine of M Realty told OregonLive. “And a lot of these guys are getting outbid.”
Many around the country share Portlanders’ real estate rage. Actually, a lot of Californians do. We can’t blame them—they’re just looking for affordable houses, too.
And, as some of those real estate agents (who, by the way, have to pay for their own signs and don’t appreciate the vandalism, no matter how cheeky) pointed out: Not all of the buyers are from California.
“Irvine eventually sold the house where the sticker appeared for $450,000,” OregonLive reported, “to a man from New York.”
