Tiny houses, as we all know, are irresistibly cute. Almost too cute. But what about tiny apartments?
Microunits in U.S. cities have been all the rage in the past couple of years, proposed as one answer to the national housing shortage, and good for young folks and seniors—and, heck, maybe even some (small) families. They’ve popped up in Boston, Seattle, and San Francisco, among other cities.
But, unusual for New York City, the Big Apple has lagged behind in actually getting some projects off the ground. No longer! Brick Underground reports that applications are now being accepted for 14 of My Micro NY’s prefab studios.
For NYC, the prices are quite affordable (the project was funded by a variety of local and national agencies): $950 for 11 of the studios, which are available to single people who earn between $34,526 and $48,350; $1,492 for three studios, which are reserved for single people earning between $53,109 and $78,650, or two people earning between $53,109 and $89,830.
Yes, that’s right: You can earn $78,650 in New York City, all by your lonesome, and still need affordable housing.
Decently sized salary, small pad: the 55 studios at 335 E. 27th St. in Kips Bay range from 260 to 360 square feet.
But they’re not skimping on amenities. As Curbed reports, the building will include “a virtual doorman, bike storage, fitness center, business room, salon, roof terrace, and, for an extra charge, storage lockers.”
